Adhir Ranjan writes to President, urges him to invoke Article 355 in Bengal

On Wednesday leader of Congress party in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind to impose Article 355 of the Constitution in the Trinamool Congress-ruled West Bengal.

Citing the Birbhum incident where Deputy Pradhan Bhadu Sheikh was killed and a few hours later houses in the area were set on fire resulting in 8 deaths including that of women and children, he alleged that the law and order situation in West Bengal has completely broken down. He expressed concern over political murders taking place in the state.

“The law and order situation in West Bengal has completely broken down. It is very sad to note that during last month itself there were 26 political murders in West Bengal. The poll violence and post poll violence has claimed many lives,” Adhir wrote in the letter.

The law and order situation in Bengal has completely broken down, said Adhir.

He urged President to invoke Article 355 of the Constitution.

“In view of the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal, I request you to invoke Article 355 of the Constitution to ensure that the Government of West Bengal is carried on in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution,” he wrote.

Article 355 in the Constitution states that “It shall be the duty of the Union to protect every State against external aggression and internal disturbance and to ensure that the Government of every State is carried on in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution.”

India, 12 others abstain in UNSC on vote on Russia’s draft resolution on Ukraine

India, along with 12 other UN Security Council members, abstained on a resolution tabled by Russia on the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Belarus, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and Syria joined the Russian Federation in submitting the text.

The draft resolution was defeated by a vote of 2 in favour to none against, with 13 abstentions, it would have needed nine votes in favour with no veto to pass.

Russia and China voted in favour of the resolution while India and the remaining Security Council members abstained.

The draft resolution by Russia demanded civilian protection in Ukraine and called for unhindered access for humanitarian assistance in Ukraine.

It was the Council’s third vote since 24 February and India abstained all of them. Twice in the Security Council and once in the General Assembly on resolutions on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

After the vote on the resolution, other council members made statements, however, India did not.

United States said Russia is using the Council to provide cover for its brutal actions.  It is “unconscionable” that Russia has the audacity to submit a draft resolution requesting that the international community resolve a humanitarian crisis that Russia alone created.

Explaining that the United States will abstain from voting, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said:  “To state the obvious, Russia does not care about the deteriorating humanitarian conditions and the millions of lives and dreams the war has shattered. Russia is the aggressor, the attacker, the invader, the sole party in Ukraine engaged in a campaign of brutality against the people of Ukraine.”

‘Vajpayee’s worst fears have come true’: Mahua Moitra slams BJP for ‘Modi’ Chants in Parliament

On Tuesday Trinamool Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra said that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s worst fears have come true.

Referring to Vajpayee’s remarks in Parliament in 1972, Mohua Moitra said that the government has turned Parliament into Rome’s Colosseum where the prime minister enters like a gladiator to the chants of ‘Modi, Modi’.

She said, “I would like to quote former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1972 who said in Parliament: These days the atmosphere in New Delhi makes one choke. It is not easy to breathe freely. The chanting of a prime minister’s name on All India Radio from morning to night, saturated propaganda on cinema screens, how can people sitting in the Opposition fight this.”

She further said, “It is India’s greatest tragedy perhaps that the very party Vajpayee ji led as prime minister today leads the government that has turned this very same Parliament into the Colosseum of Rome,”

Mahua Moitra said participating in the discussion on the demands for grants for the ministry of civil aviation 2022-23.

This remark came after BJP members chanted the name of PM Modi in the Lok Sabha when the Budget session resumed after BJP’s resounding victory in four states including Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur.

Pushkar Singh Dhami takes oath as Uttarakhand CM

On Wednesday Pushkar Singh Dhami took oath as Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, for the second time in Dehradun’s Parade Ground in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP president JP Nadda were also present.

Pushkar Dhami was administered the oath by Uttarakhand Governor Lt Gen (retd) Gurmit Singh.

PM Modi congratulated Pushkar Singh Dhami and tweeted, “Many congratulations to Pushkar Dhami ji on taking oath as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. In the last 5 years, Devbhoomi has made rapid progress in every field. I am sure that you and all your ministers will give further impetus to it, setting a new paradigm of development according to the aspirations of the people.”

The BJP won 47 seats in the 70-member Uttarakhand assembly in the recent state elections, while the Indian National Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party bagged 19 seats and 2 seats respectively. Independent candidates won 2 seats.

Over 50 lakh Covid vaccine doses administered to children aged 12-14 years

According to the latest data of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare updated on Wednesday morning, more than 50 lakh COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered to children in the 12-14 years age group.

COVID-19 vaccination for the age group 12-14 years was started on 16 March, 2022. So far, more than 52 lakh (52,10,775) children have been administered with the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

Union health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya tweeted, “Another feather in the cap of the world’s largest vaccination drive. Over 50 lakh youngsters between 12-14 age group have received their first dose of COVID 19 vaccine. Extremely proud of our young warriors!”

With this the total number of Covid vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 181.89 crore.

Over 2.2 crore (2,20,10,777) precaution doses have been administered to healthcare workers (HCWs), frontline workers (FLWs) and those aged 60 years and above.

More than 1.09 crore precaution doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to those aged above 60 years.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to visit Birbhum on Thursday

On Wednesday while addressing a government program Bengal Chief Minister announced that she will visit Birbhum district on Thursday.

This announcement comes after eight people were burnt to death in West Bengal’s Birbhum district on Tuesday.

She further accused the opposition parties, including the BJP, Congress and CPI(M), of using the incident to malign the state government.

Mamata Banerjee condemned the incident and said that she had already dismissed the sub-divisional police officer.

“The Birbhum, Rampurhat incident is unfortunate. I have immediately dismissed the sub-divisional police officer. I will go to Rampurhat tomorrow,” said Mamata Banerjee.

She compared the incident with the Hathras case in Uttar Pradesh in 2020 and said, “Few parties are going today (to Birbhum). It’s not like UP where no one was allowed to enter Hathras after the rape. We don’t do these things.”

This comes after Bengal Governor wrote a letter to CM Mamata Banerjee in which he accused her of taking an accusatory stance in the incident.

PM Modi congratulates farmers, MSMEs, weavers as India achieves target of $400 billion from exports

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday took to twitter to laud farmers, MSMEs and exporters, as India achieved its target in the current fiscal of reaching $400 billion from exports.

For the first time, India had set a target of reaching $400 billion from exports, and the target has been achieved 9 days ahead of the schedule.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the landmark as a ‘key milestone’ in the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

“India set an ambitious target of $400 Billion of goods exports & achieves this target for the first time ever. I congratulate our farmers, weavers, MSMEs, manufacturers, exporters for this success. This is a key milestone in our Aatmanirbhar Bharat journey,” tweeted PM Modi.

Exports in 2021-22 reached $400 billion, compared to $292 billion in the previous fiscal year of 2020-2021.

Centre revokes Disaster Management Act provisions for Covid containment measures, but masks to stay

All existing Covid restrictions imposed by the National Disaster Management Authority are set to be removed on March 31. On Wednesday the Ministry of Home Affairs said that the Disaster Management Act will no longer be invoked for Covid-safety measures. However, masks will still have to be worn in public places and also social distancing has to be maintained.

Since 24th March 2020, on the direction of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the Ministry of Home Affairs has been issuing Orders and Guidelines under the Disaster Management Act, (DM Act) 2005, for the containment of COVID-19 in the country.

Central Government, in close coordination with the State Governments and Union Territory Administrations (UTS) have taken various proactive measures to deal with the unprecedented global crisis of COVID-19 pandemic.

“NDMA has taken a decision that there may not be any further need to invoke the provisions of the DM Act for COVID containment measures,” read the order signed by Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla

However, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MOHFW) advisories on COVID containment measures, including the use of face masks and hand hygiene, will continue to guide the overall national response to the pandemic.

Bengal Governor Writes to CM Mamata Banerjee Over Violence in Birbhum

On Tuesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sent a letter to Governor Jagdeep Dhankar regarding the Rampurhat incident. Accusing the Governor of making “unwarranted statements”, Ms Banerjee, in a letter, wrote, “Your statements have political overtones supporting other political parties to browbeat the Bengal government”.

On Wednesday Governor wrote a counter letter to CM Mamata Banerjee.

In the letter wrote Dhankhar accused Mamata Banerjee of taking an accusatory stance in the incident where Sanju Sheikh six women and two children were burnt alive in Bogtoi village.

“As usual you have taken accusatory stance (in your March 22 communication) at my restrained just reaction to grisly carnage, worst in recent memory at Rampurhat, where reportedly the entire family of Sanju Sheikh six women and two children were burnt alive in Bogtoi village. Casualty figure is stated to be higher as per reports,” read the letter.

He called the incident a “shocking carnage” and said that the incident “is being justifiably compared by many to the incidents in the state few years ago, while you (Mamata Banerjee) were in the opposition.”

He said that he cannot be a mute spectator In the face of such enormity.

“Adopting diversionary tactics you have labelled my reaction as “sweeping and uncalled for statement.”In the face of such enormity I cannot ‘fiddle’ in Raj Bhawan and be a mute spectator. That would be unpardonable abdication of my constitutional duty,” Governor said in the letter.

He also questioned the credibility of the SIT headed by Gyanwant Singh and said SIT is being taken as a ‘cover up operation’ to provide escape route to rouge elements

“There can just be no credibility for the SIT headed by Gyanwant Singh, suffering judicial taint and condemnation? SIT is being taken as ‘cover up operation’ to provide escape route to rogue elements. “Men Friday” in probe are cut out for ‘hatchet work and not fair independent investigation,” said Governor.

He also said that rather than finding fault in the Governor it is time for Mamata Banerjee to hold the rule of law as the supreme command.

“It is high time for you now to hold the rule of law as the supreme command, rather than finding fault in the Governor, who is expectedly performing his solemn duty under the Constitution rightly at this most unfortunate moment that has seen people being burnt alive,” said Governor in the letter written to Mamata Banerjee.

Shaheed Diwas: PM Modi to inaugurate Biplobi Bharat Gallery at Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata

On the occasion of Shaheed Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate at Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata on 23rd March.

 

Prime Minister will also address the gathering during the event via video conferencing at 6 PM.

The gallery displays the contribution and armed resistance of the revolutionaries against British colonial rule. The main purpose of the gallery is to provide a view of the events that led up to 1947.

“The Gallery displays the contribution of the Revolutionaries in the freedom struggle and their armed resistance to British colonial rule. This aspect has often not been given its due place in the mainstream narrative of the freedom movement. The purpose of this new gallery is to provide a holistic view of the events that led up to 1947 and highlight the important role played by the Revolutionaries,” a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office read.

The PMO further added, “Biplobi Bharat Gallery depicts the political and intellectual backdrop that triggered the Revolutionary movement. It showcases the birth of the revolutionary movement, formation of significant associations by revolutionary leaders, spread of the movement, formation of Indian National Army, contribution of Naval Mutiny, among others.”
