Death toll rises to 165 in Nepal flash floods

Officials stated on Thursday that the death toll from the massive floods in Nepal has risen to 165. Many people, including over 300 Indian tourists, remain missing in this disaster, which ranks among the country’s worst in recent years.

Nepal Police reported on Thursday that the death toll from the floods—caused by the Bhote Koshi River wreaking havoc across three districts on Wednesday—has reached 165, following the recovery of three additional bodies from Nawalparasi West.

Fatalities include two in Rasuwa, 12 in Nuwakot, 27 in Dhading, 64 in Chitwan, 20 in Gorkha, nine in Tanahun, 26 in Nawalparasi East, and five in Nawalparasi West, bringing the total death toll to 165.

Lt Gen BS Raju appointed as the new Vice Chief of Army Staff

On Friday Ministry of Defence announced that Lieutenant General Baggavalli Somashekar Raju will take over as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff from May 1, 2022.

Lt Gen BS Raju is an alumnus of Sainik School Bijapur and National Defence Academy and was commissioned in the JAT Regiment on 15th December 1984.

He commanded his Battalion during OP PARAKRAM in the Western Theatre and in Jammu & Kashmir. He also holds the distinction of commanding the Uri brigade along the Line of Control, a Counter Insurgency Force and the Chinar Corps in the Kashmir Valley. The General Officer also served as the Commandant, Indian Military Training Team in Bhutan.

During his illustrious career spanning 38 years, he has tenanted many important regimental, staff and instructional appointments in the Army Head Quarters and in field formations to include, Colonel Military Secretary Legal in Military Secretary branch, Brigadier General Staff of the operationally active White Knight Corps, Deputy Director General Military Operations & Director General Staff Duties.

Prior to taking over as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, the General Officer was tenanting the appointment of Director General Military Operations during the standoff on the LAC.

The General officer is a qualified helicopter pilot having carried out operational flying in Somalia, as part of UNOSOM II. He is is also the Colonel of the JAT Regiment.

Lt Gen Raju has attended all important career courses in India and has had the privilege of doing his NDC at Royal College of Defence Studies, United Kingdom. He also holds a distinguished Master’s programme degree in Counter Terrorism at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, United States.

For his illustrious contribution to the service, he has been awarded Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Yudh Seva Medal.

Form team of entrepreneurs to suggest reforms in banking: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Global Patidar Business Summit (GPBS), being organized by Sardardham, on Friday via video conferencing.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said, “It is constant effort of the government that youth of the ordinary families can also become entrepreneurs and dream and take pride in entrepreneurship”

PM asked the business community to form a team of entrepreneurs and experts to suggest reforms in banking and other sectors and to point out the shortcomings.

“I urge you to form a team of entrepreneurs and experts to suggest shortcomings and reforms in banking and other sectors and how to change it,” said PM.

The Prime Minister said schemes like Mudra Yojna are giving strength to those people to get into business who never dreamed about doing so. Similarly, Start Up India is helping in realization of innovation, talent and dreams of Unicorn which appeared inaccessible earlier.

Modi said that every small and big business is contributing to the national progress and  this spirit of Sabka Prayas is becoming strength of the New India in the Amrit Kaal. He expressed happiness that the Summit this year is discussing this aspect in detail.

Modi called for a new outlook towards financial empires. He emphasized that it may be decided that industries can be based in small cities instead of big cities. He gave example of Jyotirgram Yojna which triggered industrial activities in villages. Now such work can be done for small town and cities, he said.

Sardardham is organizing GPBS under ‘Mission 2026’ to provide an impetus to socio-economic development of Patidar community. The Summit is organized every two years. The first two Summits were held in Gandhinagar in 2018 and 2020, and the current Summit is now being held in Surat. The main theme of GPBS 2022 is “Aatmanirbhar Community to Aatmanirbhar Gujarat and India”.

India with highest number of internet shutdowns for 4th time in a row

India for the fourth consecutive year has emerged as the country with the highest number of internet shutdowns, a report released by tech policy think tank Access Now has found. Reasons for internet shut down ranges from curbing protests to preventing online frauds.

The report by Access Now stated that in 2021, authorities deliberately shut down the internet at least 182 times across 34 countries.

And out of the 182 times, the report stated that India has blacked out the internet at least 106 times.

India topped the list by a longshot compared to others at the top of the list which include Myanmar (at least 15 times), Sudan and Iran (both at least five times each).

Out of the total 106 shutdowns, 85 were found in Jammu and Kashmir alone.

“India disrupted the internet at least 106 times — making it the world’s leading perpetrator of Internet Shutdowns for the fourth consecutive year. 85 were in the Jammu and Kashmir region, where authorities have imposed the world’s longest-running shutdowns,” said Access Now.

‘Not much difference between Yogi & Mamata’, says Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Thursday told ANI that there is not much of a difference between Yogi Ji and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. He claimed that Bengal is acing in reporting the maximum amount of gang rapes, political violence, and murders.

“Claims (by WB CM Mamata Banerjee) of not letting Bengal become Hathras or Unnao sounds good, but there’s not much difference between Yogi Ji & her. Both of them do wrong work. Bengal is acing in reporting maximum amount of gang rapes, political violence, murders,” Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told news agency ANI.

The Congress leader also compared Hathras and Hanskhali incidents and said that both of the incidents don’t have much difference in them.

“Hathras & Hanskhali, both are condemnable incidents & don’t have much difference in them… a Dalit in both incidents, CMs & police trying to save their image…” ANI quoted Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury saying.

On Wednesday Mamata Banerjee claimed that the Hanskhali case was a suicide case that was turned into a rape case and alleged that BJP and CPI(M) are trying to defame Bengal.

India’s consumption of Semiconductors expected to cross 80 billion Dollars by 2026: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Semicon India Conference 2022 and shared his remarks via video conferencing at the inaugural session today.

At the outset, Modi underlined the critical role of semiconductors in today’s world and said “it is our collective aim to establish India as one of the key partners in global semiconductor supply chains. We want to work in this direction based on the principle of Hi-tech, high quality and high reliability.”

Modi said that India is building a digital infrastructure to connect over 1.3 billion Indians. He said “we are using digital technology to transform lives in all sectors of governance from health and welfare to inclusion and empowerment.”

Prime Minister said, with steps like connecting six hundred thousand villages with broadband investment in developing capabilities in 5G, IoT and clean energy technologies, India is paving the way to lead the next technology revolution.

Modi said that India is headed for robust economic growth with the world’s fastest-growing Startup Ecosystem and the consumption of Semiconductors is expected to cross 80 billion Dollars by 2026 and 110 Billion Dollars by 2030.

The Prime Minister informed about measures like the abolition of more than 25,000 compliances, a push towards auto-renewal of licenses, transparency and speed in regulatory framework via digitization and one of the most favourable taxation structures in the world.

The Prime Minister said that there is heavy investment in skilling and training young Indians for the needs of the 21st century.

“We have an exceptional semiconductor design talent pool which makes up to 20% of the world’s semiconductor design engineers. Almost all of the top 25 semiconductor design companies have their design or R&D centres in our country”, he added.

Modi said that India has undertaken several measures towards transforming the Indian manufacturing sector.

Prime Minister Modi talked about ”Production Linked Incentives” schemes that offer incentives of over 26 Billion Dollars in 14 key sectors. Over the next 5 years, the electronics manufacturing sector is expected to see record growth, he informed.

Modi also told the audience about the recently announced Semi-con India Programme with a total outlay of over 10 billion dollars. This program aims to provide financial support to companies investing in semiconductors, display manufacturing and design ecosystems.

Noting the formation of the new world order, the Prime Minister asked to seize the opportunity that is emerging. “We have worked hard over the last few years to create an environment that encourages growth. India has an appetite for tech and risk-taking. We have put the odds in your favour as far as possible through a supportive policy environment. We have shown that India means business”, the Prime Minister concluded.

There should be an atmosphere free of terrorism: MEA on talks with Pakistan

On Thursday, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Arindam Baghchi said that dialogue between the India and Pakistan can only take place in an atmosphere free of terror. While answering questions at a weekly media briefing Arindam Baghchi sadi that India’s stand is very simple that there should be an atmosphere in which there is no terrorism.

“Our stand is very simple that there should be an atmosphere in which there is no terrorism, only in such an atmosphere things can be negotiated. There had been a courtesy letters exchange between the Prime Ministers between of the two governments. But our main point has been that there should be an atmosphere free of terrorism. This is a legitimate demand, then how can there be a dialogue if there is terror? You asked if there is any change, there is no change,” said Baghchi.

Arindam Bagchi also said that the terror attack in Karachi only underlined the need for all countries to take an undifferentiated position against terrorism.

“Regarding Karachi look, let me clarify this very clearly, our stance against all forms of terrorism- anywhere- has been consistent. We’ve been condemning it. This particular incident only underlines the need for all countries to take an undifferentiated position against terrorism. I think I will emphasize that element,” Baghchi told reporters.

Pakistan has no locus to talk about what’s happening in J&K: External Affairs Ministry

India on Thursday asserted that Pakistan has no locus standi to talk about J&K. While answering questions at a weekly media briefing External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Arindam Baghchi said that it is wrong for Pakistan to say anything regarding J&K even if it is a general comment.

“It is wrong for Pakistan to say that, if they are talking in that way by looking at Jammu and Kashmir, and if it is a general comment, then also it is wrong,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Arindam Baghchi said at a weekly media briefing.

“In any case, I think Pakistan has no locus to talk about and from this perspective on what’s happening in Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.

Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif on April 25, tweeted about PM Narendra Modi’s visit to J&K, saying India is trying to create false normalcy there.

“Indian PM’s staged visit to IIOJK & laying foundation stones of hydroelectric projects, in contravention of Indus Waters Treaty, is another desperate attempt to project false ‘normalcy’ in occupied territory. We stand with Kashmiris as they rejected the visit & observed Black Day,” tweeted PM Modi.

EAM Jaishankar hold talks with Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka

External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankar on Thursday arrived in Dhaka to hold talks with his Bangladesh counterpart AK Abdul Momen. And later called on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“Thank Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her warm reception. Conveyed personal greetings of PM @narendramodi. Our bilateral relations are moving from strength to strength under the guidance of the two leaders,” tweeted EAM Jaishankar.

At a Joint Press Interaction in Dhaka Jaishankar said, “Our leaders have remained in touch and this afternoon, I had the privilege to call on the Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina. We discussed a number of issues. We reviewed bilateral ties as well as regional and global issues. So, I am really very privileged to have met her and spent time with her.”

He further said, “It is also a matter of satisfaction for us that trade, disbursement of loans on bilateral projects, travel services and investment are at new heights and that they have recovered the momentum which was lost during the Covid.”

“Dr. Momen and @DrSJaishankar discussed the bilateral issues between Bangladesh and India. They expressed satisfaction about the ongoing 🇧🇩 🇮🇳 cooperation, vowed to further strengthen the bilateral ties, stressed on regional stability for socio-economic development as a whole,” the Bangladesh foreign ministry tweeted.

Ukraine-returned students admitted to State Colleges, Announces Mamata Banerjee

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced that the Bengal government will accommodate students who had returned from Ukraine. She also blamed the Centre for not taking any responsibility for the students and said that the students cannot spend a huge amount of money on their education in another foreign country.

“Two months passed, Centre has not yet taken any responsibility for the students who have returned from Ukraine. We had asked the Centre to allow us to accommodate them at different colleges. Instead, they have just asked the students to go to Poland and Hungary for their studies. It is not possible for the students to spend a huge amount again in another foreign country. But we have chalked out a plan for the students,” she said while speaking to the press.

Banerjee said that out of the 422 returnees from Ukraine, 409 are MBBS students, three are in a dental course and one is pursuing veterinary course. While six are engineering students, three are labourers.

She said that the six engineering students have been offered seats in private colleges and two of them have already joined the course while others are in the process of joining.

Among the three dental students, the one who has completed his studies, have been given an internship at a government dental college while the remaining two will be allowed in practical classes at the same college, she told reporters.

Out of the three workers, two have been appointed on casual basis at a district magistrate’s office while the third one has already got a job and moved to Dubai, Banerjee said.

The CM said that the veterinary student has been provided admission at the West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences.

Out of 409 MBBS students a total of 23 sixth year medical students will be allowed to undergo internship at government medical colleges. The fifth-year and fourth-year students, a total of 135, will be allowed to undergo ‘observing seats’ in different medical colleges.

As many as 172 third year and second year medical students will be allowed to attend practical classes, Banerjee said.

She said that 78 first year students who are qualified for the 2021 session would be allowed for counselling immediately at private medical colleges against management quota seats as fresh admission.
