At ICJ, Indian judge votes against Russia’s military operation in Ukraine

On 16th March the International Court of Justice has asked Russia to immediately stop its military operation in Ukraine. 13 voters were in favour of the direction to stop Russia, while 2 were against. Indian judge at the UN court Justice Dalveer Bhandari voted in favour of the majority, against Russia.

“The Russian Federation shall immediately suspend the military operations that it commenced on 24 February 2022 in the territory of Ukraine,” said the ICJ order on Wednesday.

Though there are no direct means of enforcing ICJ orders and there have been cases where countries have ignored them.

The judges who voted in favour of the order were President of the ICJ Judge Joan E Donoghue (USA), Judge Peter Tomka (Slovakia), Judge Ronny Abraham (France), Judge Mohamed Bennouna (Morocco), Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf (Somalia), Judge Julia Sebutinde (Uganda), Judge Dalveer Bhandari (India), Judge Patrick Lipton Robinson (Jamaica), Judge Nawaf Salam (Lebanon), Judge Iwasawa Yuji (Japan), Judge Georg Nolte (Germany), Judge Hilary Charlesworth (Australia), Judge ad hoc Daudet voted in favour of the direction.

Indian judge voting against Russia comes after India abstained from UN resolution against Russia.

The two ICJ judges who voted against the orders to Russia to stop its military activities in Ukraine were Vice-President Kirill Gevorgian from Russia and China’s Xue Hanqin.

PM Modi To Address Valedictory Function Of 96th Common Foundation Course At LBSNAA

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be addressing the Valedictory Function of 96th Common Foundation Course at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) on 17th March at 12 noon via video conferencing. Prime Minister will inaugurate the new sports complex and dedicate revamped Happy Valley Complex to the Nation.

The 96th Foundation Course is the first Common Foundation Course at LBSNAA based on the principles of Mission Karmayogi, with new pedagogy and course design. The batch comprises of 488 OTs from 16 services and 3 Royal Bhutan Services (Administrative, Police and Forest).

To harness the adventurous and innovative spirit of the youthful batch, new pedagogy guided by the principles of Mission Karmayogi was designed. Emphasis was put on transforming the Officer Trainee from a student, citizen into a public servant through initiatives like interaction with Padma Awardees in the spirit of “Sabka Prayas” and village visit for an immersive experience of rural India. Officer Trainees also visited villages in remote areas to understand the challenges faced by people living in these areas. Modular approach for Curriculum was adopted in consonance with the principle of continuous graded learning and self-guided learning. In addition to health tests, fitness tests were also carried out to support the transition of an ‘exam burdened student’ to a ‘healthy youthful civil servant’. All 488 Officer Trainees were given first level training in Krav Maga and in various other sports.

Rahul Gandhi attacks Facebook, says its ‘worse for democracy’

On Wednesday former Congress president Rahul Gandhi attacked social media giant Facebook and alleged that it was “worse for democracy”.

“Meta-worse for democracy,” Gandhi said on Twitter, accusing the social media giant Meta of helping the BJP reach out to voters during the elections, Rahul Gandhi shared a compilation of news reports on Twitter.

He also shared a report of Al Jazeera and The Reporters’ Collective which claimed that Facebook had offered BJP cheaper deals for election advertisements as compared to other political parties.

In Lok Sabha, Congress president Sonia Gandhi urged the government on Wednesday to put an end to the alleged “systematic interference” of Facebook and other social media giants in India’s electoral politics.

“I urge the government to put an end to the systematic interference and influence of Facebook and other social media giants in the electoral politics of the world’s largest democracy. This is beyond partisan politics,” Sonia Gandhi said in her zero hour mention.

Accommodate Medical Students Who Returned From Ukraine In Indian Colleges: Mamata Banerjee writes to PM Modi

On Wednesday West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to accomodate Indian medical students who returned from war-torn Ukraine at the equivalent level in the private medical colleges. In a letter to PM Modi, Mamata Banerjee urged him to allow eligible medical students who returned from Ukraine for internship in the government medical colleges.

“Sir, this is an unprecedented war situation that calls for an extraordinary solution,” Banerjee wrote to Narendra Modi.

“Students who are eligible for the internship, should be allowed to undergo the internship in government medical colleges of the state and they will also paid the stipend at par with other candidates,” she wrote to PM.

She further added that students in different years of the studies may be allowed to get admitted at the equivalent level in the private medical colleges against the existing seats and these medical colleges may be allowed to increase an equivalent number of seats for accommodating these students.

She said that to date 391 students from West Bengal have returned back from Ukraine and are passing through severe stress and anxiety due to their uncertain future.

West Bengal extends Covid-19 curbs till March 31, relaxation on Holika Dahan

On Tuesday the West Bengal government extended the Covid-19 curbs and existing relaxations till March 31, providing relaxation on ‘Holika Dahan’.

According to the order by the state government, the movement of people and vehicles along with public gatherings will be prohibited from 12 am to 5 am, except on ‘Holika Dahan’ (March 17). Only essential and emergency services will be allowed during the restricted time period.

The government underlined that wearing masks, hygiene protocol, and maintaining physical distancing must be followed.

Meanwhile, Covid-19 vaccination for the age group of 12-14 years already started from March 16 all over the country and the Centre on Tuesday said that only Corbevax vaccine would be administered to the 12-14-year-old kids. The centre also changed the condition of booster dose to include everyone above the age of 60. Earlier, the administration of precaution dose was restricted to those above 60 years of age with comorbidities, frontline workers, and healthcare workers.

PM Modi congratulates Bhagwant Mann on taking oath as Punjab CM

As Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Bhagwant Mann took oath as the Punjab chief minister on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him and said they will work together for the growth of Punjab.

“Congratulations to Shri Bhagwant Mann Ji on taking oath as Punjab CM. Will work together for the growth of Punjab and welfare of the state’s people,” PM Modi wrote on Twitter.

Bhagwant Mann was sworn in as the Punjab Chief Minister at a mega event in Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in Punjab’s Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district on Wednesday. Governor Banwarilal Purohit administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mann in the swearing-in ceremony.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, Delhi minister Satyendar Jain, and other leaders wearing yellow turbans were also present at the ceremony.

Mamata Banerjee interacts with Ukraine returnee students

On Wednesday Mamata Banerjee met the students who returned from war-torn Ukraine at the Khudiram Anushilan Kendra. Mamata said that engineering students returning from Ukraine will be able to study in West Bengal colleges. Besides, Mamata’s government will write a letter to the Medical Council so that fourth, fifth and sixth-year medical students and interns can continue their studies in the state private medical colleges. Mamata further said that the government will write to the Medical Council for special permission for second and third-year medical students so that these students can continue their studies in private colleges. Mamata also said that if the medical council does not make a decision on the issue, she will go to Delhi herself.

For engineering students, Mamata Banerjee said that the West Bengal government will arrange for their education in the state at a nominal cost.

Bhagwant Mann Takes Oath As New Chief Minister Of Punjab

On Wednesday Bhagwant Mann was sworn in as the Punjab Chief Minister at a mega event in Punjab’s Khatkar Kalan, Bhagat Singh’s ancestral village.

The AAP registered a landslide victory in the Punjab Assembly polls, winning 92 seats in the 117-member Assembly.

Bhagwant Mann, who was contesting from Dhuri Assembly constituency in Sangrur district, won by a margin of 58,206 votes over Congress’ Dalvir Singh Goldy.

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav congratulated Bhagwant Mann ahead of his oath-taking ceremony and hoped that the state will flourish under his leadership.

“Infinite congratulations and best wishes to the newly elected Chief Minister of Punjab, Shri Bhagwant Mann ji for the oath ceremony! It is hoped that under his able leadership, the crops of progress, brotherhood, and new outlook will flourish in Punjab,” Akhilesh Yadav tweeted in Hindi.

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu also congratulated Bhagwant Mann and wished him a successful tenure.

“My hearty wishes to Thiru. @BhagwantMann, who is swearing in as Chief Minister of Punjab today. Tamil Nadu & Punjab share a long history of being vocal about linguistic rights & rights of the state in the Indian Union. Wishing the new government in Punjab, a successful tenure,” tweeted M K Stalin.

‘Important day for India’: PM Modi as COVID-19 vaccination for 12-14 age group starts

On Wednesday Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged youngsters in the 12-14 age group and all those above 60 to get vaccinated.

“Today is an important day in India’s efforts to vaccinate our citizens. Now onwards, youngsters in the 12-14 age group are eligible for vaccines and all those above 60 are eligible for precaution doses. I urge people in these age groups to get vaccinated.” PM tweeted.

The children in the said age group will be administered Corbevax vaccine manufactured by Hyderabad-based Biological E.

This statement comes after government announced that vaccination for children aged 12 to 14 years starts from today and changed the condition of booster dose to include everyone above the age of 60. Earlier, the administration of precaution dose was restricted to those above 60 years of age with comorbidities, frontline workers, and healthcare workers.

Modi also appreciated state governments for their support towards India’s vaccination drive.

“I would like to appreciate our state governments for their support towards India’s vaccination drive. Several states, especially the hill states and those where tourism is important, have achieved near total vaccination coverage and several big states have also done well,” tweeted Modi.

In another tweet, he also emphasized India’s efforts in the global fight against the Covid-19 disease.

“In line with India’s ethos of caring for the entire planet, we sent vaccines to several nations under the Vaccine Maitri programme. I am glad that India’s vaccination efforts have made the global fight against COVID-19 stronger,” he tweeted.

PM Modi interacts with embassy officials, organisations involved in evacuation from Ukraine

On Tuesday Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with stakeholders involved in Operation Ganga. Operation Ganga successfully evacuated about 23000 Indian citizens, as well as 147 foreign nationals belonging to 18 countries, from Ukraine.

Reiterating the high priority that government attaches to the safety of Indians abroad, Prime Minister recalled that India has always acted with alacrity to assist its citizens during any international crisis. Guided by India’s age-old philosophy of Vasidhaiva Kutumbakam, India has also extended humanitarian support to nationals of other countries during emergencies.

During the interaction, representatives of the Indian Community and private sector in Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, and Hungary narrated their experiences of being part of Operation Ganga, the challenges they faced and expressed their sense of satisfaction and honour at having contributed to such a complex humanitarian operation, read the statement from Prime Minister Office.

Prime Minister expressed his warm appreciation for Indian community leaders, volunteer groups, companies, private individuals, and government officials who worked tirelessly for the success of the operation. He praised the patriotic fervor, the sense of community service, and the team spirit displayed by all stakeholders involved in Operation Ganga.  Prime Minister especially praised the various community organisations, pointing out that their selfless service exemplifies the Indian civilizational values that they continue to embody even in foreign shores, said the PMO.

Speaking about the efforts made by the Government to ensure the safety of Indian nationals during the crisis, Prime Minister recalled his personal interactions with leaders of Ukraine and its neighbouring countries and expressed gratitude for the support received from all the foreign governments.
