NCW Launches Legal Aid Clinic To Provide Free Legal Assistance And Counseling To Women In Distress

In a move to make legal aid more accessible for women, the National Commission for Women (NCW) in collaboration with Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA) has launched a legal aid clinic which will act as a single-window facility for resolving grievances of women by offering them free legal assistance.

NCW is also planning to set up similar legal services clinics in other State Commissions for Women. The legal aid clinic will operate out of the Commission’s office in New Delhi.

According to the press release by Ministry of Women and Child Development any woman will be able to walk-in to the facility for accessing free legal advice and counseling where legal services advocates in the panel of DSLSA will help women.

The launch ceremony of the legal aid clinic was held on Tuesday at the Commission’s office in Delhi.

Addressing the gathering, Chairperson Ms Rekha Sharma said that the legal aid centre aims to provide free advice and legal services to women.

“The legal aid clinic will focus on protecting women’s rights and providing them with a one-stop centre for seeking legal counseling and help. Women will now be able to obtain legal aid without running from pillar-to-post,” she said.

Under the new legal aid clinic, counseling will be provided for walk-in complainants, women in distress will be given legal assistance, advice and information on various schemes of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA)/ DSLSA, assistance in mahila jansunwai, free legal aid, hearings in matrimonial cases and other complaints registered with the Commission will be provided among other services.

Padma awardees visit National War Memorial in Delhi; pay homage to martyrs

The Padma awardees who were honoured at the Civil Investiture Ceremony- II on Monday (March 28) paid a visit to the iconic National War Memorial (NWM) in New Delhi on Tuesday. President Ram Nath Kovind had conferred two Padma Vibhushan, nine Padma Bhushan and 54 Padma Shri awards for the year 2022 at the Civil Investiture Ceremony-II held in Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Among those who visited the National War Memorial were Padma Vibhushan recipient Dr Prabha Atre, who laid wreath and paid homage to the fallen heroes at NWM. Padma Shri winners Prof (Dr) Maria Krzysztof Byrski of Poland, Dr Chirpat Prapandvidya of Thailand, Smt Basanti Devi, Shri Dhaneswar Engti, Guru Tulku Rinpoche, Dr (Prof) Harmohinder Singh Bedi, Sadguru Brahmeshanand Acharya Swamiji and Shri Abdulkhadar Imamsab Nadakattin were also present.

“As the awardees went around the NWM, they were informed about the gallant deeds of the Armed Forces by the service personnel. The awardees appreciated the Government’s initiative of organising the visit to the NWM, saying that the monument radiates the values of patriotism, devotion to duty, courage and sacrifice of the soldiers,” said Ministry of Defence in a press release.

They urged people, especially the youth, to visit the monument and learn about the heroic stories of the soldiers.

“It was a great honour for us to come here and pay respects to our soldiers. We are really proud of them because they are protecting us and taking our Nation forward,” said Padma Vibhushan winner Dr Prabha Atre, a renowned Indian classical vocalist.

On March 22, Padma awardees who were honoured at the Civil Investiture Ceremony- I , including Padma Bhushan winners Shri Devendra Jhajharia & Shri Sachchidanand Swami and Padma Shri winners Sardar Jagjit Singh Dardi, Shri Kaajee Singh & Pandit Ram Dayal Sharma, also visited the iconic monument.

World Air Quality report 2021: Delhi most polluted capital city in the world

New Delhi has emerged as the most polluted capital city in the world, according to the latest World Air Quality Report for 2021. New Delhi is followed by Dhaka (Bangladesh), N’Djamena (Chad), Dushanbe (Tajikistan), and Muscat (Oman). The report found that no country met the World Health Organization’s (WHO) PM2.5.

India’s average pollution levels reached 58.1 µg/m3 in 2021, which ended a three-year trend of improving air quality.

“India’s annual average PM2.5 levels reached 58.1 µg/m3 in 2021, ending a three-year trend of improving air quality. India’s annual PM2.5 averages have now returned to pre-quarantine concentrations measured in 2019,” read the report.

According to the report, India was home to 11 of the 15 most polluted cities in Central and South Asia in 2021 and 48% of India’s cities exceeded 50 µg/m3 which is more than 10 times the WHO guideline.

Delhi saw a 14.6% increase in PM2.5 concentrations in 2021 with levels rising to 96.4 µg/m3 from 84 µg/m3 in 2020. No cities in India met the WHO air quality guideline of 5 µg/m3. In 2021, 48% of India’s cities exceeded 50 µg/m3, or more than 10 times the WHO guideline,” the report said.

Air pollution has a massive impact on human health in India. It is the second biggest risk factor for disease, and the economic cost of air pollution is estimated to exceed $150 billion dollars annually.

Major sources of air pollution in India include vehicular emissions, power generation, industrial waste, biomass combustion for cooking, the construction sector, and episodic events like crop burning.

It is estimated that 20% to 35% of total urban PM2.5 concentrations are directly or indirectly due to internal combustion engines in motor vehicles.
