ECI prohibits TMC MLA Naren Chakraborty from campaigning for threatening voters

On Wednesday the Election Commission of India took strict action against Trinamool Congress MLA from Pandabeswar, Narendranath Chakraborty, and prohibited him from campaigning for seven days till April 6.

The prohibition comes after a video went viral that allegedly shows the TMC MLA threatening people who vote for the BJP.

The ECI issued a notice today prohibiting Naren Chakraborty from holding any public meetings, public processions, public rallies, road shows and interviews, public utterances in media from 10:00 AM of 30 March till 8:00 PM of 6 April, 2022.

“The Commission, under Article 324 of the Constitution of India and all other powers enabling in this behalf, orders to prohibit him from holding any public meetings, public processions, public rallies, roadshows and interviews, public utterances in media (electronic, print, social media) etc. in connection with ongoing bye-election for a week i.e. 7 days from 10:00 AM of 30t March, 2022 (Wednesday) till 8:00 PM of 6 April, 2022 (Wednesday),” read the notice from ECI.

This notice comes after a delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party met ECI on Tuesday demanding action against Trinamool Congress MLA Narendranath Chakraborty.

TMC candidates Shatrughan Sinha, Babul Supriyo file nominations for by-polls in Bengal

On Monday Trinamool Congress candidates Shatrughan Sinha and Babul Supriyo filed their nominations for by-elections. Actor turned politician Shatrughan Sinha will fight the Lok Sabha by-election from Asansol, while Supriyo was nominated for the Ballygunge Assembly seat.

The by-polls are supposed to be held on 12 April and the counting of the votes is to be done on 16 April.

Speaking to the media after filing his nomination Supriyo said that he is thankful to ‘Didi’ for giving him this opportunity to contest from the presitigious Ballygunge constituency.

The Ballygunge Assembly seat is going for polls as incumbent MLA and state minister Subrata Mukherjee died in November 2021.

Shatrughan Sinha, a former BJP leader, filed his nomination at the office of the district magistrate of Paschim Bardhaman.

The BJP on Friday announced Agnimitra Paul against TMC’s star candidate Shatrughan Sinha and Keya Ghosh against Babul Supriyo as its candidates for the by-elections to the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency and the Ballygunge Assembly segment, respectively.
