Padma awardees visit National War Memorial in Delhi; pay homage to martyrs

The Padma awardees who were honoured at the Civil Investiture Ceremony- II on Monday (March 28) paid a visit to the iconic National War Memorial (NWM) in New Delhi on Tuesday. President Ram Nath Kovind had conferred two Padma Vibhushan, nine Padma Bhushan and 54 Padma Shri awards for the year 2022 at the Civil Investiture Ceremony-II held in Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Among those who visited the National War Memorial were Padma Vibhushan recipient Dr Prabha Atre, who laid wreath and paid homage to the fallen heroes at NWM. Padma Shri winners Prof (Dr) Maria Krzysztof Byrski of Poland, Dr Chirpat Prapandvidya of Thailand, Smt Basanti Devi, Shri Dhaneswar Engti, Guru Tulku Rinpoche, Dr (Prof) Harmohinder Singh Bedi, Sadguru Brahmeshanand Acharya Swamiji and Shri Abdulkhadar Imamsab Nadakattin were also present.

“As the awardees went around the NWM, they were informed about the gallant deeds of the Armed Forces by the service personnel. The awardees appreciated the Government’s initiative of organising the visit to the NWM, saying that the monument radiates the values of patriotism, devotion to duty, courage and sacrifice of the soldiers,” said Ministry of Defence in a press release.

They urged people, especially the youth, to visit the monument and learn about the heroic stories of the soldiers.

“It was a great honour for us to come here and pay respects to our soldiers. We are really proud of them because they are protecting us and taking our Nation forward,” said Padma Vibhushan winner Dr Prabha Atre, a renowned Indian classical vocalist.

On March 22, Padma awardees who were honoured at the Civil Investiture Ceremony- I , including Padma Bhushan winners Shri Devendra Jhajharia & Shri Sachchidanand Swami and Padma Shri winners Sardar Jagjit Singh Dardi, Shri Kaajee Singh & Pandit Ram Dayal Sharma, also visited the iconic monument.

Mamata Banerjee writes to Opposition leaders for united fight against BJP

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to all opposition leaders all across the country and called for a meeting to discuss strategies to take on the BJP.

In the letter she alleges BJP of using Central agencies such as the ED, CBI, Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and the Income Tax Department to “harass and corner political opponents” across the country.

“I am writing to you to express deep concern over direct attacks on this country’s institutional democracy by the ruling BJP. Central agencies such as the ED, CBI, Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and the Income Tax Department are being used to target, harass and corner political opponents across the country for vendetta,” wrote Mamata Banerjee.

“We all must resist the ruling BJP’s intention to misuse these central agencies with the sole intent of suppressing opposition leaders. Central agencies are jolted to action just when elections are round the corner. It is amply clear that the BJP ruled states get a free pass from these agencies to paint a rosy picture of their hollow governance. We believe in transparency and accountability in governance but we will not tolerate the vindictive politics of the BJP that has led to witch-hunt,” the letter reads.

 

She alleged BJP of attacking the country’s federal structure by attempting to influence a certain section of the judiciary. She also said that as the opposition party it is their responsibility to hold the government accountable and also to resist the stifling of voices of dissent.

The letter reads, “Time and again, the BJP is trying to attack the federal structure of this country by attempting to influence a certain section of the judiciary. As the opposition parties, it is our constitutional responsibility to hold this government accountable for their actions, to resist the stifling of voices of dissent.”

She urged the opposition parties to come together and has called for a meeting to discuss a “way forward at a place as per everyone’s convenience and suitability.”

The letter has been written at a time when the Bengal chief minister’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, has been questioned by the Enforcement Directorate in the coal mining case.

Don’t vote or face consequences: BJP shares video of TMC MLA threatening voters

In charge of BJP’s IT cell Amit Malviya has shared a video on Tuesday in which TMC MLA Naren Chakraborty can be seen issuing threats to the voters of the saffron party.

Malviya asked the Election Commission to take note of the video. He also accused Bengal CM and TMC chief Mamata Bannerjee of patronising such MLAs.

In the video, TMC MLA Naren Chakraborty asked BJP supporters not to vote or else they would be found after the polls and will face consequences. And said if they did not vote, they could stay in the state and do a job or business and the TMC would support them

“TMC’s Pandaveswar (Asansol) MLA Naren Chakraborty, is seen issuing open threats to BJP voters and supporters, asking them not to come out and vote, or else face consequences. Such criminals should be behind bars but in Bengal Mamata Banerjee patronises them. ECI must take note,” tweeted Amit Malviya along with video of Naren Chakraborty.

 

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari also shared the video and tweeted, “Naren Chakraborty; AITC MLA of Pandabeswar Assembly can be seen issuing diktats to his underlings; how to stop BJP supporters from voting. Pandabeswar Assembly Segment falls under Asansol Lok Sabha Constituency where bypoll is going to be held in about two weeks time.”

He further said that the TMC MLA Naren Chakraborty was initially detained by CISF at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata.

“Naren Chakraborty; earlier a Member of Burdwan Zilla Parishad & erstwhile Pandabeshwar Block TMC President (just like the recently arrested Anarul Hossain of Rampurhat); in 2016, was initially detained by CISF at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport; Kolkata,” said Suvendu.

Suvendu further added that Naren Chakraborty was later arrested by the Police under the Arms Act for an unlicensed gun and rounds of cartridges.

“Later on he was arrested by the Police under the Arms Act; for trying to board a Chennai-bound flight with an unlicensed gun and rounds of cartridges. He could not show any valid licence,” Suvendu said in another tweet.

India’s aim is to become world’s largest Startup destination: Piyush Goyal

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Piyush Goyal on Monday said that the country aspires to become the largest startup ecosystem in the world.

Addressing a session on ‘Gateway to Growth – Roundtable on Indian Startup Ecosystem’ in Abu Dhabi, UAE, Goyal said that the Startup industry represents innovation ecosystem which is giving a new direction to India.

Piyush Goyal said, “Today we are the third largest Startup ecosystem, but our aspiration is to be the world’s number one startup destination. The Startup bug has caught India’s imagination. The entire innovation ecosystem that the Startup industry represents is giving a new direction, new momentum to India.”

Goyal said, “India offers one of the best ecosystems for Startups with a special ‘jugalbandi’ or blend between investors and entrepreneurs to get a balanced outcome and achieve a win-win solution for all.”

The Minister appreciated the promotion of Indian Startups by the India Innovation Hub platform under the India Pavilion. “I do hope that the 700 Startups that have showcased their innovation at Expo2020 Dubai would have all gone back enriched with newer opportunities and ideas for the future,” added the Minister.

On the Government’s role in promoting Startups, the Minister said that India aims to provide a level playing field and the best business ecosystem to the Startups.

India has finalized the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with UAE to further enhance bilateral trade, B2B and to explore attractive investment opportunities.

“We have recently finalized the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the UAE, which is expected to further enhance bilateral trade, B2B engagement and explore attractive investment opportunities,” said Goyal.

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Piyush Goyal further said, “I can assure you that we will take this partnership to newer heights in the areas of sustainability, aerospace, space technology, connectivity, AI, data analytics, 5G, Metaverse, etc. We look forward to leveraging each other’s offerings and expertise.”

Piyush Goyal said that the UAE-India partnership is destined to play an important role in the global economy and in ensuring a better future for billions of people around the world and said this will be a defining partnership for the 21st century.

Vice President calls for an ‘objective re-evaluation of Indian history through fact-based research’

The Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Monday said historians should be committed to truth and called for an ‘objective re-evaluation of Indian history through fact-based research.’

Stressing the need for greater academic rigor in historical research, he cautioned against “selective or incomplete accounts of Indian history”. He said that retelling historical facts through an ideological viewpoint will provide a distorted view, as was done under the colonial rule. Instead, he urged historians to strengthen ‘scientific writing of history with the help of specialized bodies like the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR).

The Vice President was participating in the valedictory function of the Golden Jubilee year of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), organized by the Ministry of Culture. He also inaugurated an exhibition on ‘Freedom Struggle of India’ by ICHR on the occasion.

VP Naidu also called for greater research on unsung Indian heroes of the freedom struggle, many of whom were ‘limited to mere footnotes in history books’. As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, he said, their individual stories must be documented to reveal their ‘pain, struggle and the great pride with which they fought for the motherland. ‘Untold history must be told’, he said.

Touching upon India’s civilizational values such as brotherhood, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, the Vice President said ‘these values have defined us and remained constant in our civilizational history. Kings and kingdoms changed over time, but these values remained a guiding lodestar to us.’

Calling upon people to earnestly learn about Indian history, Naidu said history can unshackle ‘our minds of any inferiority complex we may harbour’. He emphasized that recounting tales of our freedom struggle will ‘not only remind us of the importance of nationalism but also of social harmony and brotherhood’.

Suggesting that ‘history should not be a niche subject monopolized by a chosen few, the Vice President said that there is a tremendous amount of work to be done in the domain of translation of literary and historical sources and accounts of ancient and medieval ages.

Bharat Bandh: Nationwide strike enters day 2; banking, transport services partially hit on 1st day

The two-day nationwide strike which started on Monday enter its second day today. On the first day, the strike led to a partial disruption of transportation and banking in quite a few states.

On the other hand, the Kerela High Court on Monday issued an order prohibiting government employees from abstaining from work as a part of Bharat Bandh.

West Bengal saw protests and demonstrations from the left-backed protestors as they blocked railway tracks and also protested in the streets. Mamata Banerjee’s party has been criticized by the Left for not supporting the strike. West Bengal Government issued a memorandum stating that all of its offices including those provided with Grants-in-Aid by the State Government will remain open. And unauthorised absence by employees may invite a show-cause, and they may have to lose salary for the day (or days), concerned.

As the strike goes into its second day or its final day the transportation and banking services are still likely to be partially hit.

The strike has been called by the Joint Forum of Central Trade Unions to protest against the slashed interest rates of provident fund, rising fuel prices and privatisation of central public sector undertaking.

Government accords ‘In-Principle’ approval for setting up 21 Greenfield Airports

The government of India has accorded ‘In-Principle’ approval for setting up of 21 Greenfield Airports across the country.

According to the statement by Ministry of Civil Aviation the places where the airports approved are namely Mopa in Goa, Navi Mumbai, Sindhudurg and Shirdi in Maharashtra, Bijapur,Hassan, Kalaburagi and Shimoga in Karnataka, Dabra (Gwalior) in Madhya Pradesh, Kushinagar and Jewar (Noida) in Uttar Pradesh, Dholera and Hirasar in Gujarat, Karaikal in Puducherry, Dagadarthi, Bhogapuram and Orvakal (Kurnool) in Andhra Pradesh, Durgapur in West Bengal, Pakyong in Sikkim, Kannur in Kerala and Hollongi (Itanagar) in Arunachal Pradesh.

Out of these, 8 Greenfield airports viz. Durgapur Airport in West Bengal, Shirdi Airport in Maharashtra, Kannur Airport in Kerala, Pakyong Airport in Sikkim, Kalaburagi Airport in Karnataka, Orvakal (Kurnool) Airport in Andhra Pradesh, Sindhudurg Airport in Maharashtra and Kushinagar Airport in Uttar Pradesh have been operationalized.

Season’s first consignment of Alphonso and Kesar mango exported to Japan

On last Saturday, March 26 in a major boost to export, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated Season’s first consignment of fresh Mangoes export from Mumbai to Japan.

Alphonso and Kesar varieties of Mangoes were exported by M/s.Berrydale Foods (OPC) Pvt. Ltd., a registered exporter of APEDA to M/s. Lawson Retail Chain, Japan. These mangoes were treated and packed at APEDA-approved Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board ( MSAMB)’s facility.

A mango festival is being organised in Tokyo, Japan as a part of Azadi ki Amrit Mahotsav, in collaboration with Embassy of India, Japan & Invest India today (March 28, 2022), wherein Mango exhibition and tasting will be done at various outlets of Lawson super markets.

APEDA, a Statutory Body under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, is the nodal agency for promoting Indian agro and processed food exports and is responsible for facilitating and promoting export of horticulture, floriculture, processed food, poultry products, dairy and other agro products.

Olympic Gold Medalist Neeraj Chopra receives Padma Shri

On Monday Tokyo Olympic Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra received the Padma Shri from President Ram Nath Kovind in the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Amongst the prominent awardees who received the Padma Awards at today’s Investiture ceremony were Padma Vibhushan recipients – Dr. Prabha Atre and Shri Kalyan Singh (Posthumous). Padma Bhushan recepients – Shri Victor Banerjee, Dr. Sanjaya Rajaram (Posthumous), Dr. Pratibha Ray and Acharya Vashishtha Tripathi as also Dr. Krishna Murthy Ella and Smt. Suchitra Krishna Ella (Duo).

The Awards are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. These Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.

West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar holds protest in Kolkata

Amid the 2 day nationwide strike by the trade unions BJP on Monday held a protest in Kolkata led by Sukanta Majumdar.

The protest comes after the suspension of 5 BJP MLAs including Suvendu Adhikari from the West Bengal Assembly for a year for allegedly creating ruckus during the assembly.

The suspension came as TMC and BJP MLAs exchanged blows with each other in the Assembly. The chaos happened after the opposition party i.e BJP demanded a statement from the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the state’s Law and Order situation.

Criticizing the Mamata Banerjee led West Bengal Government he said that this incident is “A new low for democracy in West Bengal”

“A new low for democracy in West Bengal. TMC MLAs assaulted BJP MLAs inside the assembly on demanding the discussion on Rampurhat massacre.Political violence, murders, rapes and appeasement is increasing in Bengal under Mamata Banerjee govt with each passing day,” tweeted Sukanta Majumdar.
