Rahul Gandhi leads Congress protest in Delhi against fuel price hike

Congress MPs both from Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha led by Rahul Gandhi on Thursday staged a protest against the fuel price hike. The protest is being held at the iconic Vijay Chowk.

The Congress today started its three-phase campaign – ‘Mehngai-mukt Bharat Abhiyaan’ – against the centre from Thursday, which will continue till April 7.

“From 2nd to 4th April, there will be district level “Mehngai Mukt Bharat Dharna & March”. And on 7th April, there will be state level, “Mehngai Mukt Bharat Dharna & March” at State Headquarters,” read a statement by issued by Congress.

The opposition has been continuously attacking the Centre for the rise in price of LPG, petrol and diesel. Several union ministers have said that the spike in prices is linked to the Ukraine war.

On Wednesday Rahul Gandhi said that PM Modi has a to-do list which includes, “How much should I increase the rate of petrol-diesel-gas, how to stop people’s ‘Kharti Pe Charcha’, how to show youth empty dreams of employment, which government company should I sell today, how to make farmers more helpless,” tweeted Gandhi in Hindi.

Gandhi again took shots at PM Modi on Thursday and said that PM is always carrying a bag full of jumlas. Gandhi also compared the petrol prices around the world, with India having the highest price for Petrol.

“Afghanistan: 66.99, Pakistan: 62.38, Sri Lanka: 72.96, Bangladesh: 78.53, Bhutan: 86.28, Nepal: 97.05, India: 101.81,” tweeted Gandhi.

‘Come again’, says PM Modi to 72 retiring Rajya Sabha members

On Thursday Prime Minister Narendra Modi bid farewell to the 72 Rajya Sabha MPs who retired from their positions. He said that the experience of the members of Parliament was more valuable than academic knowledge.

Bidding farewell to the 72 Rajya Sabha MPs PM Modi said, “Though this is a farewell but as they say in Bengali, ‘Ami aaschi’ or in Gujarati – ‘Aao jo’ – ‘come again’. That’s what we want to say ‘Come again’.

PM Modi said that experience has more power than academic knowledge. He also said that all MPs should take their rich experiences to all parts of the country.

“Our RS Members have a lot of experience..sometimes experience has more power than academic knowledge,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister added, “We have spent a long time in this Parliament. This House has contributed a lot to our lives, more than we have contributed to it. The experience gathered as a member of this House should be taken to all four directions of the country.”

A total of 72 members are retiring from the Rajya Sabha, including Anand Sharma, AK Antony, Subramanian Swamy, M C Mary Kom, Swapan Dasgupta.

2 billion people live in conflict-affected areas, estimates United Nations

On Wednesday the United Nations said that one-quarter of humanity or two billion people lives in conflict-affected areas which is the highest number since 1945 when World War II ended.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres while briefing the Peacebuilding Commission on Wednesday said that the Commission’s task grows larger by the day, citing the highest number of violent conflicts since 1945, including Yemen, Syria, Myanmar, Sudan, Haiti, the Sahel and now Ukraine.

Antonio Guterres said that two billion people, or one-quarter of humanity, lives in conflict-affected areas, and pointed out that the poorest and most vulnerable pay the highest price.

He further added that in the last decade the world has spent $349 Billion on peacekeeping humanitarian relief and refugee support

He pointed out that in 2020 global military expanse has rose to $2 trillion.

“When we consider the costs of war, prevention and peacebuilding are a bargain & prerequisites for a better future,” he said.

Centre says can’t change number of attempts, age limit for civil services exam

The Centre on Wednesday said that it is not feasible to change the existing provisions regarding number of attempts and age-limit in respect of the Civil Services Examination.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that representations have been received from the Civil Services Examination (CSE) aspirants regarding grant of age relaxation and extra attempt to the candidates in CSE due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Jitendra Singh said that this issue had also been brought before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India vide Writ Petitions filed by the CSE aspirants.

“Based on the judgements passed by the Hon’ble Apex Court, the matter has been considered and it has not been found feasible to change the existing provisions regarding number of attempts and age-limit in respect of the Civil Services Examination,” said Jitendra Singh.

Jitendra Singh also said that the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has informed that in respect of Objective type Examination the answer keys are declared only after the entire process of the Exam for the respective year is completed i.e. after the declaration of the final result of the Examination.

It is kept at the Commission’s website for a period of one month in active window and for further period of one month in archive.

Army variant of MRSAM system successfully completes development trials

On Wednesday two Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) Army weapon system achieved direct hits against high-speed aerial targets at Integrated Test Range, Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.

The launches were carried out establishing the accuracy and reliability of the weapon system against targets covering the sea-skimming and high altitude functionality within the envelope. With the conclusion of flight trials for different ranges and scenarios, the system has completed its development trials.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Defence, the performance of all weapon system components including missile, weapon system radar and command post have been validated during these trials.

The flight tests were carried out in the presence of senior officials from Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Army.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh complimented Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Indian Army and the Industry for successful launches of the MRSAM-Army and said the successful launches have once again proved the reliability of the system.

On March 27, 2022, the missile system was successfully flight tested twice against high-speed aerial targets for different ranges as part of the live firing trials. The missiles intercepted the aerial targets and destroyed them completely, registering direct hits at both the ranges. The first launch was to intercept a medium altitude long range target and second launch was for proving the capability of a low altitude short range target.

India to procure 15 light combat helicopters for Rs. 3,887cr for Indian Army, Airforce

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday in New Delhi approved the procurement of 15 Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Limited Series Production at the cost of Rs. 3,887 crore along with Infrastructure sanctions worth Rs. 377 crore.

“This helicopter is equipped with requisite agility, maneuverability, extended range, high altitude performance, and around-the-clock, all-weather combat capability. The helicopters will be able to perform roles of Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR), Destruction of Enemy Air Defence (DEAD), Counter Insurgency (CI) operations, against slow moving aircraft and Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs), high altitude bunker busting operations, Counter Insurgency operations in jungle and urban environments and support to ground forces and would be a potent platform to meet the operational requirements of Indian Air Force & Indian Army,” said the Ministry of Defence.

According to a statement by the Defence Ministry, technologies such as reduced Visual, Aural, Radar and IR signatures and crashworthiness features for better survivability have been integrated into LCH for deployment in combat roles catering to emerging needs for the next 3 to 4 decades.

“The manufacturing of LCH by HAL will give a further push to Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and boost indigenisation of defence production and the defence industry in the country. Production of LCH will reduce import dependence for Combat helicopters in the country. Light Combat Helicopters are already in the import embargo list. With its versatile features built in for combat missions, LCH has export capability,” said the Defence Ministry.

ECI prohibits TMC MLA Naren Chakraborty from campaigning for threatening voters

On Wednesday the Election Commission of India took strict action against Trinamool Congress MLA from Pandabeswar, Narendranath Chakraborty, and prohibited him from campaigning for seven days till April 6.

The prohibition comes after a video went viral that allegedly shows the TMC MLA threatening people who vote for the BJP.

The ECI issued a notice today prohibiting Naren Chakraborty from holding any public meetings, public processions, public rallies, road shows and interviews, public utterances in media from 10:00 AM of 30 March till 8:00 PM of 6 April, 2022.

“The Commission, under Article 324 of the Constitution of India and all other powers enabling in this behalf, orders to prohibit him from holding any public meetings, public processions, public rallies, roadshows and interviews, public utterances in media (electronic, print, social media) etc. in connection with ongoing bye-election for a week i.e. 7 days from 10:00 AM of 30t March, 2022 (Wednesday) till 8:00 PM of 6 April, 2022 (Wednesday),” read the notice from ECI.

This notice comes after a delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party met ECI on Tuesday demanding action against Trinamool Congress MLA Narendranath Chakraborty.

Dearness Allowance hiked by 3% for central govt employees, pensioners

The government has hiked the dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) for the central government workers and pensioners.

The decision is taken by the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has given its approval to release an additional instalment of Dearness Allowance (DA) to Central Government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) to pensioners.

The hike represents an increase of 3 percent over the existing rate of 31% of the basic pay or pension, to compensate for the price rise.

The new rates are effective from January 1, 2022.

“This increase is in accordance with the accepted formula, which is based on the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission,” said the cabinet

According to the cabinet, the combined impact on the exchequer on account of both Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief would be Rs.9,544.50 crore per annum. This will benefit about 47.68 lakh Central Government employees and 68.62 lakh pensioners.

BJP report on Birbhum killings will interfere with CBI probe, says Mamata Banerjee

On Wednesday, the five-member fact-finding committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), formed after the Birbhum violence in West Bengal, submitted its report to party chief JP Nadda.

Reacting to the report Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the BJP fact-finding panel’s report which is submitted to the party president J P Nadda, will weaken and interfere with the CBI probe into the incident. Banerjee told reporters that she condemns this kind of attitude from the saffron party.

She said that there should not be interference from any political party into the investigation.

Banerjee that the report mentions the name of TMC Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal, which shows the vindictive and biased attitude of the BJP.

She said that “how they can mention my district president’s name? It means they want to arrest him. That is a personal vendetta.”

She alleged that BJP wants to arrest everyone who opposes them.

On Friday, 25 March, the Calcutta High Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to take over the case regarding the violence in Birbhum district of West Bengal, in which eight people were burned to death following the murder of TMC panchayat leader Bhadu Sheikh at a crossroad near the village of Bogtui.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday visited Parliament House in Toyota Mirai, a Hydrogen based Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV). Demonstrating the car powered by ‘Green Hydrogen’, Gadkari emphasised the need to spread awareness about Hydrogen, FCEV technology and its benefits to support hydrogen-based society for India.

Gadkari also assured that Green Hydrogen will be manufactured in India, Green Hydrogen refuelling stations will be established generating sustainable employment opportunities in the country.

He said India will soon become Green Hydrogen exporting country.

The Minister said in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi vision of clean and cutting-edge mobility in India, our government, through ‘National Hydrogen Mission’ is committed to focus on green and clean energy.

The Toyota Mirai has a Guinness World Record to run a distance of 1359 km, making it the first hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle to cover the longest distance without refuelling.
