After poll debacle, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi asks 5 state presidents to resign, including Sidhu
On Tuesday Congress president Sonia Gandhi asked Pradesh Congress Committee presidents (PCC) of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa, and Manipur units to resign after its loss in the assembly elections in these states.
“Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi has asked the PCC Presidents of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa & Manipur to put in their resignations in order to facilitate reorganisation of PCC’s,” Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala wrote on Twitter.
The move came after a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) which was held in New Delhi to discuss the performance of the party in the recent assembly polls.
Uttarakhand Congress Chief Ganesh Godiyal, Goa Congress Chief Girish Chodankar, Uttar Pradesh Congress Chief Ajay Kumar Lallu, Punjab Congress Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, and Manipur Congress President Nameirakpam Loken all have been asked for resignation by Sonia Gandhi.
Taking responsibility for the party’s defeat in Uttarakhand Godiyal said that he wanted to resign on the result day itself but waited for the order of the high command.
“Taking moral responsibility for the party’s defeat in the state assembly elections, I have submitted my resignation today. I wanted to resign on the result day itself but stayed on waiting for the order of the high command,” Uttarakhand Congress Chief Ganesh Godiyal Godiyal said in a tweet in Hindi.
Uttar Pradesh Congress Chief Ajay Kumar Lallu also took responsibility for the defeat of the party and said he will continue to fight for the rights of the common man.
“Taking moral responsibility for the defeat of the Congress party in the assembly elections, I am resigning as the President of the UP Congress Committee. Thanks to the top leadership for reposing faith in a common worker like me. As an activist, I will continue to fight for the rights of the common man,” Ajay Kumar Lallu said in a tweet in Hindi.
