Expressing concern about the recent violent incidents in Bengal, a group of members of Bengal’s civil society wrote a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The letter was signed by 22 eminent people including filmmaker Aparna Sen, actors Dhritiman Chattopadhyay, Koushik Sen, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Santilal Mukhopadhyay, Ridhi Sen, and Suman Mukhopadhyay, rights activist Bolan Ganguly, poet Srijato Bandyopadhyay and singer Rupam Islam.

In the letter the members said that they were deeply shocked and concerned by some recent incidents in Bengal.

They questioned that was the police administration was not active before the recent violent incident at Rampurhat in Birbhum.

“Any well-meaning person would unequivocally call the recent March massacre at Rampurhat in Birbhum a demonic language. We are no exception. The administration has been investigating and compensating you since the incident and this move is undoubtedly welcome. But the question remains why the police administration was not active before such an incident?,” read the letter.

They further said that the assassination of Anis Khan, Trinamool councilors Tapan Kandu and Anupam Dutt are equally disturbing and reprehensible.

The letter read, “The brutal assassination of Anis Khan, Jhalda or Panihati Congress and Trinamool councilors Tapan Kandu and Anupam Dutt a few days ago or the violent and undemocratic voting centered on municipal elections in different parts of the state is equally disturbing and reprehensible.”

At the end of the letter, they said this long and ugly tradition of political violence in Bengal be stopped for the good of the people of the State.

“As a representative of a civil society that loves democracy and a healthy political environment, we hope or demand from you that this long and ugly tradition of political violence in Bengal be stopped, and that you ensure it through the administration under your leadership. For the good of the people of the State, this letter will, I hope, be accepted to that effect,” the letter read.
