Mamata fined 5 lakhs for seeking recusal, Justice Chanda exits Case
The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. This fine was imposed because Mamata had demanded the removal of Justice Kaushik Chanda from hearing her case against BJP Leader Suvendu Adhikari’s Election win in Nandigram. Mamata had accused Justice Chanda of having links with the BJP. She further stated that a photo of Justice Chanda has surfaced, which he has seen with BJP leaders.
On June 24, Justice Chanda had reserved his decision in this case. He said Mamata Bannerjee tried to tarnish the judiciary’s image when he delivered the verdict on Wednesday. Justice Chanda, on the other hand, has opted to withdraw from the case.
On 2nd May, the results of the assembly elections held in 4 states and one union territory were declared in which Mamata Bannerjee lost the election from Nandigram constituency by 1956 votes. On the day of the result, Mamta demanded recounting of votes, which was refused by the Election Commission.
Later, Mamata went to the Calcutta High Court against the election results. She filed a petition in which she accused Suvendu Adhikari of bribery in elections, corruption, and seeking votes on the basis of religion and demanded cancellation of elections.
