PM Modi to release 125 rupee coin on birth anniversary of ISKCON founder AC Bhaktivedanta Swami
On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release a 125 rupee coin to commemorate the 125th birthday of AC Bhaktivedanta Swami, a Calcutta-born spiritual leader who founded (International Society for Krishna Consciousness ) ISKCON, popularly known as the “Hare Krishna Movement,” in 1965. The announcement comes a day after Lord Krishna’s birthday, Janmashtami.
”Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release a special commemorative coin of ₹125 and will also address the gathering on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada Ji on 1st September 2021 at 4:30 pm via video conferencing,” a statement from PM Modi’s office informed.
G Kishan Reddy, the Union Minister of Culture, will also be present on the occasion.
Swami, who was born in 1896, wrote numerous books and founded temples. He obtained a chemistry degree from Scottish Church College in Calcutta, married, had children, and founded a pharmaceutical company, which he sold in 1959 to become a monk.
He then relocated to the United States, where he spread Vedic literature. He is thought to have founded around 100 Ashrams, Gurukuls, temples, and farmhouses in several Western nations. In 1968, he founded New Vrindaban Temple in West Virginia, United States.
Swami died at the age of 82 in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, after a six-month illness.
