Taliban Militants kills pregnant Policewoman in front of her family
The Taliban have said to defend women’s rights and build an inclusive government, but Afghans are skeptical, pointing to the group’s crimes all throughout the nation.
According to multiple reports, the Taliban shot and killed a pregnant Afghan policewoman in front of her family in Ghor province, in the latest act of brutality against women by the hardline Islamist organization in Afghanistan. Banu Nigara was said to have been murdered in front of her husband and children in her Firozkoh house, according to reports. “Nigara a police officer was shot dead in front of her kids and husband last night at 10 PM in Ghor province. Nigara was 6 months pregnant, she was shot dead by the Taliban,” leading Afghan journalist Bilal Sarwary tweeted on Sunday citing her family member
The Taliban denied any involvement in the killing of Nigara. “We are aware of the incident and I am confirming that the Taliban have not killed her, our investigation is ongoing,” Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujaheed told BBC. Mujaheed speculated that the policewoman could have been killed due to “personal hatred or something else,” noting that the Taliban had already confirmed amnesty for former government employees.
Witnesses told the BBC that the Taliban beat and shot the lady in front of her husband and children on Saturday, while others feared retaliation if they spoke out. According to them, three gunmen entered the residence on Saturday and searched it before tying up family members. According to one of the witnesses who spoke to the BBC, they were speaking Arabic. Her body appears to be laying on the floor with her face mutilated, according to images on social media.
The officer had been working at the provincial prison before the region was taken over by the Taliban, according to a civic activist in Ghor.
The policewoman’s death comes after a woman activist said she was beaten up by Taliban gunmen last Saturday at a protest in Kabul demanding political rights under Taliban rule. In a video, activist Nargis Saddat can be seen with blood streaming down her face.
The policewoman’s death comes just days after dozens of Afghan women protested in Herat, seeking rights and representation in the nation’s government after the Taliban took control of the war-torn country last month.
The Taliban have said they will protect women’s rights and create an inclusive government but Afghans are skeptical of the assurances and have pointed the group’s atrocities across the country.
